Endangered Species Day – a Very Short Story on its Relevance to Me

Today is Endangered Species Day, so I’ll share a story – a very short one. I was in my 40s the first time I saw a bald eagle in the wild. My kid, 17, has seen more than she can count. The pesticide, DDT, almost eradicated bald eagles and they were put on the endangered species list. The banning of DDT (thanks in large part to Rachel Carson), enabled a comeback – perhaps the greatest comeback story of my lifetime. And bald eagles were delisted from the Endangered Species list.

Bald eagles were on the brink of extinction. It took a lot of work to get them back. The bald eagle picture above landed in my backyard a few months ago. I’m still in awe each and every time I see one.
